Internet Retailer’s 2019 Top 1000 names the 342 midsized and larger merchants that exceeded Amazon’s growth rate in 2018, one of more than 200 data points for North America’s 1,000 leading e-retailers.
Amazon.com Inc. has more than doubled its share of the North American e-commerce market in the past six years, but it’s far from the only game in town, as Internet Retailer’s just-released 2019 Top 1000 report documents. In fact, 342 of the retailers and brands ranked in the Top 1000 exceeded Amazon’s 20.0% online growth rate in 2018.
Who are those 342 companies? All are listed in the 2019 Top 1000 report, which provides more than 200 data points for each of the 1,000 companies ranked, from giants like Amazon and Walmart Inc. to The Shade, an online-only retailer of custom window treatments that is No. 1000 in this year’s Top 1000.
The Shade increased its online sales 24.0% in 2018 over the prior year, Internet Retailer estimates, and it’s just one of the many lower-ranked retailers that are growing rapidly online by offering unique products and innovative services, often undercutting the prices of established retailers in their categories. In fact, the fastest-growing group of Top 1000 retailers are those ranked 401-600, which collectively increased their online sales by 22.5% in 2018.
The 2019 Top 1000 report is loaded with data that goes far beyond sales growth. For example, the report estimates that the overall conversion rate for Top 1000 retailers—the percentage of website visitors that ends in a purchase—averaged 2.5%, but varied widely by category. For example, a 5% conversion rate would be disappointing for an online flower retailer, while 3% would be spectacular for a furniture website.
